NRS taste test: An ode to the bacon sundae

We didn't think that a simple dessert outing would evoke quite the response, confusion, and judgment of our friends, so we're here to report back on Burger King's Bacon Sundae.

In true NRS form, we chose to explore this dessert on the very day that it came out, and lucky for us, the closest Burger King location was a short walk after lunch with our friends. It came as a shock that no other friends were willing to accompany us on this taste test, especially since our social circle includes many near-carnivores, the Boston Dandy, I'm-not-a-vegetarian-because-bacon-is-the-gateway-meat people, and even a few males. Perhaps Agent R, TopShelf, and I write for NRS because of our shared interest in 510-calorie sweet/savory desserts.

On our way to Burger King, Agent R brought up a valid concern: what if they run out of bacon sundaes because it was the first day it went on sale? When we arrived around 1pm, the parking lot was full, and there was quite a line. Clearly we weren't the only ones excited to try out the new Burger King summer menu, or this is what the typical lunch crowd looks like on a weekday. We wouldn't know.  The restaurant got three bacon sundae orders in a row, which they thought was hilarious. Cost: $2.59. As TopShelf pointed out, that's about 1/2 cent per calorie. There are few great price-per-calorie deals like this (interestingly enough, such deals are concentrated at restaurants similar to Burger King), but we hypothesize that such pricing schemes may also be causing national problems.

After the required photo shoots of our bacon sundaes, we started eating. And yes, it was exactly what we were hoping for. The bacon crumbles added a great crunch. The sweet and sticky caramel and chocolate were great pairings for the crispy and savory bacon. We all agreed that the caramel:chocolate ratio could have gone more in favor of the caramel, but we were all pleased. I was afraid that the cold dessert would numb my taste buds to the bacon, but who was I kidding--it's bacon. I recommend eating the large piece of bacon smothered in caramel/chocolate. All three of us finished our entire portions. Of course, the voodoo doctor was there to judgmentally order a fruit smoothie and to give us advice on going to Berryline next to "wash it all down."

Unbeknownst to us at that point, New York City traffic, President Obama's motorcade, and Boston Dandy's dinner plans prevented me and TopShelf from eating again for another 9 hours. We were so hungry that once we did eat, we saw no shame in inhaling Chinese noodles+meat on the street, standing up, in New York City, at 10pm. Imagine if we hadn't eaten a calorie-laden dessert earlier. We probably would not have made it. So there you go, bacon sundaes saved the day!
